    Description
    Org. Setting and Reporting

    The job is located in the Operations and Advocacy Division (OAD), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). OCHA is responsible for coordinating humanitarian actors to ensure a unified response to crises. The mission of OCHA is to coordinate effective humanitarian action in collaboration with national and international partners to alleviate human suffering in emergencies, advocate for the rights of those in need, and promote preparedness and sustainable solutions.

    This job opening is for the role of Humanitarian Affairs Officer / Head of Field Coordination Unit in Maiduguri, Nigeria. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Office (DHoO) under the overall supervision of the Head of Office (HoO).



    Responsibilities
    • Serves as a senior coordination/policy officer and provides advice on policy direction related to humanitarian principles and effective aid delivery.
    • Prepares policy position papers and monitors humanitarian developments.
    • Leads complex projects, coordinates international assistance, and prepares situation reports.
    • Assists in the Humanitarian Programming Cycle, develops indicators, and recommends actions based on analysis.
    • Coordinates technical cooperation projects, introduces new disaster management technologies, and organizes studies on humanitarian issues.
    • Collaborates with humanitarian agencies to plan and assess emergency assistance programmes.
    • Establishes contacts with government officials, UN agencies, and NGOs, and participates in humanitarian-related meetings and conferences.
    • Provides leadership to the work team and mentors junior officers.
    • Performs other duties as needed.

    PLANNING and ORGANIZING: Sets clear goals, identifies priority activities, and adjusts plans as needed. Uses time efficiently and foresees risks.

    ACCOUNTABILITY: Takes ownership of responsibilities, delivers outputs on time, and supports subordinates.

    JUDGEMENT/DECISION-MAKING: Identifies key issues, gathers information, considers impacts, and makes sound decisions based on available information.


    Education

    An advanced university degree in a relevant field is required.

    Work Experience

    A minimum of seven years of experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, or related areas is required. Field experience in emergency settings is necessary.


    Languages

    Fluency in English is required, knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.


    Assessment
    The evaluation may include an assessment exercise followed by an interview.
