Senior Engineering Manager (Payments & Credit Systems) – Group Level
Mode - Hybrid
Role Overview
Our client is seeking a highly technical, execution-driven Engineering Manager to provide group-level oversight, strategic guidance, and technical leadership across the design, development, and scale-up of financial services platforms, including payments, credit infrastructure, lending systems, and digital financial products.
The successful candidate will combine:
- Deep hands-on engineering capability
- Strong architecture and system design expertise
- Proven experience building high-availability fintech systems
- The ability to lead and grow high-performing engineering teams
- Group-level oversight across multiple companies and ability to step in as needed
You will be responsible for ensuring secure, scalable, regulator-ready infrastructure that powers payment processing, credit underwriting, loan management, collections systems, integrations with banks, and third-party financial APIs.
- Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Provide group-level oversight for payment processing, credit scoring, loan management, and financial ledger systems.
- Design systems with 99.9%+ uptime, strong data integrity, and high scalability.
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations and data protection standards.
- Oversee API design for integrations with banks, payment gateways, credit bureaus, and KYC providers.
- Hands-On Engineering
- Contribute directly to the codebase (40–50% technical involvement).
- Conduct architecture reviews and approve critical pull requests.
- Debug complex production issues.
- Lead implementation of microservices, secure auth flows, real-time processing, and distributed systems.
- Ensure strong DevOps practices including CI/CD, automated testing, and monitoring.
- Payments & Credit Domain Ownership
- Build and manage transaction processing, loan origination, risk assessment, credit decisioning, and collections systems.
- Integrate with core banking systems, payment gateways, credit bureaus, and KYC/AML providers.
- Design fraud detection and transaction monitoring frameworks.
- Engineering Team Leadership
- Recruit, mentor, and develop engineering teams.
- Set engineering standards, coding guidelines, and documentation frameworks.
- Establish sprint processes and execution discipline.
- Conduct performance reviews and growth planning.
- Foster a culture of accountability, security awareness, and ownership.
- Risk, Compliance & Security
- Ensure adherence to PCI-DSS, data protection regulations, and secure coding standards.
- Lead internal audits and security reviews.
- Implement encryption, key management, and access controls.
- Drive disaster recovery and business continuity planning.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with product, risk, compliance, operations, and customer support teams.
- Collaborate with external financial partners.
- Translate business requirements into scalable technical systems.
Required Experience
- 7+ years of backend engineering experience.
- 3+ years managing engineering teams.
- Strong fintech experience in payments, lending, digital banking, or credit platforms.
- Experience building systems in regulated financial environments.
- Proficiency in Java (Spring Boot), , Go, or Python.
- Experience with REST APIs, microservices, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with relational and NoSQL databases.
- Understanding of transaction management, ledger systems, and financial data modeling.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- CI/CD pipelines and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Experience building BNPL or credit underwriting engines.
- Experience integrating with African or emerging market financial rails.
- Understanding of fraud detection systems.
- Experience in high-growth fintech startup environments.
- Knowledge of open banking standards.
- High ownership mentality
