    Description
    In-country Environmental Surveillance Consultant will provide support to the WHO surveillance team on Environmental Surveillance, as well as assist with Vaccine Preventable Disease Surveillance (VPDS) and outbreak response activities.


    Summary of assigned duties:
    • Assist in developing a comprehensive Environmental Surveillance (ES) plan integrated into the country's surveillance strategy.
    • Monitor ES performance, identify challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
    • Conduct regular ES desk reviews and share findings with the country and region.
    • Carry out supervisory visits to ES sites, focusing on underperforming areas.
    • Enhance personnel capacity in ES within the context of VPD surveillance.
    • Investigate underperforming ES sites and collaborate with teams for necessary actions.
    • Ensure timely sample collection and shipment to laboratories within 3 days.
    • Expand and optimize ES in high-risk areas through collaboration with local teams.
    • Promote the use of electronic data collection tools among supervisors.
    • Provide updated tools and guidance for Environmental Surveillance for Poliovirus.
    • Participate in VPD surveillance and outbreak response activities.
    • Engage with relevant institutions to improve ES site quality.
    • Prepare and share monthly and quarterly activity reports.
    • Undertake additional assignments as required by the country and regional offices.

    Educational Qualifications:
    Advanced university degree in epidemiology, health sciences, medicine/veterinary sciences, or related disciplines incorporating environmental health.


    Experience:

    Minimum of five years experience in public health surveillance, including Environmental Surveillance, outbreak investigation, and epidemiology at national and international levels.


    Skills/languages:
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and statistical tools.
    • Strong writing skills for creating engaging and accurate communication materials.
    • Ability to effectively synthesize information.
    • Understanding of technical aspects in public health surveillance, including Environmental Surveillance.
    • Capability to work in diverse environments collaboratively.
    • Exceptional organizational and multitasking skills under pressure.
    • Excellent interpersonal abilities, diplomacy, and sound judgement.
    • Proficient in English/French with basic knowledge of the assigned country.
