    Description

    SUMMARY:

    The Accounting Officer in a law firm is a key financial steward responsible for

    maintaining the firm's financial health and integrity. This role involves managing the day-to-

    day accounting operations, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements

    specific to the legal industry, and producing accurate financial reports. The Accounting

    Officer serves as a financial gatekeeper—tracking all client trust accounts, legal retainers,

    operating expenses, and vendor obligations while ensuring the firm maintains transparency,

    accountability, and audit readiness. The Accounting Officer reports to the Office Manager

    who is under the direct supervision of the Manager Partner.

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Financial Record-Keeping & Bookkeeping

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records using accounting software.
    • Post and process journal entries, bank reconciliations, and client ledger management.
    • Record all firm and client transactions, including time billings, retainers, and

    disbursements.

    Trust Account and Retainer Management

    • Monitor and reconcile client trust accounts in accordance with legal regulatory

    standards.

    • Ensure client retainers are properly accounted for and compliant with local bar

    association rules.

    Billing & Collections

    • Prepare and issue client invoices based on time and disbursement entries submitted

    by lawyers.

    • Track accounts receivable and follow up on overdue accounts in coordination with

    the legal team.

    • Manage client billing cycles and ensure accuracy in time and expense records.

    Expense & Vendor Management

    • Process firm expenses, reimbursements, and vendor payments in a timely manner.
    • Reconcile payables and ensure internal approvals are followed.
    • Raising and documenting invoices and receipts.

    Payroll & Taxation

    • Assist in payroll preparation and disbursement (Including pay slips).
    • Calculate and remit taxes such as VAT, withholding tax, PAYE, and pension

    contributions, NSITF.

    Reporting & Audit

    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for management.
    • Assist with external and internal audits, and ensure proper documentation is

    available.

    • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations applicable to law firms.

    Budgeting & Forecasting

    • Support the Manager Partner in preparing the annual budget and monitoring budget

    variances.

    • Provide financial forecasts and analysis to support strategic decision-making.

    Compliance & Internal Controls

    • Implement internal controls to safeguard firm assets and data.
    • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax laws, and legal ethics

    rules.

    Liaison with External Parties

    • Coordinate with external auditors, tax consultants, and bank officials as required.
    • Respond to financial queries from clients regarding billing or account matters

    General

    • Keep a database of with service providers and update.
    • Other relevant accounting functions as the organization may deem fit.
    • Other responsibilities as the management may deem fit from time to time.
    • Physical and E- Filling and Documentation of financial documents
    • Track routine maintenance of vehicles and vehicle papers
    • Renewals & suscriptions (Internet, DSTV, etc.)
    • Support the monitoring and implementation of organization's financial policies.

    SKILL SET:

    • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
    • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Xero) and Microsoft

    Excel.

    • Familiarity with legal industry billing systems (e.g., Clio, LEAP, or similar platforms) is an

    added advantage.

    • Exceptional attention to detail and high degree of accuracy.
    • Strong organizational and time management skills.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills to liaise with lawyers, clients, and

    vendors.

    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
    • Problem-solving attitude and ability to work under pressure.
    • Knowledge of trust accounting rules and law firm regulatory requirements.

    QUALIFICATION & EXPERIENCE:

    • A bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
    • Professional certification or part qualification in ICAN, ACCA, or CPA is not

    mandatory but is an added advantage.

    • Minimum of 3–5 years of accounting experience, with at least 1–2 years in a

    professional services or legal firm setting.

    • Familiarity with local tax laws and regulatory compliance specific to law firms.
    • Experience working in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment Project
    • Project Management is not Mandatory but will be considered.

    Job Type: Full-time

    Pay: ₦300, ₦500,000.00 per month
