About Shittu Afeez Oluniyi:
Fifteen-years (15 years) experience in plant breeding in international agricultural research organizations (IITA, IRRI, AfricaRice) with focus on genetic resources management, breeding, seed production, and application of molecular techniques in genetic diversity and plant breeding. I spent 3 years with IRRI-AFRICA in rice breeding research. Joined IITA in 2009 to 2011, involved in the development of early hybrids that are resistance to striga attack and drought tolerance. Introgression of submergence tolerant genes to most popularly adopted lowland rice varieties in Nigeria. Also genes of interest, Iron, drought and anaerobic germination tolerance gene into most Nigeria popular varieties. Conducting several agronomic and breeding in-out station trials, trained farmers, backstopping and supervised over 15 postgraduate and undergraduate students.
Other areas of core competence include: solid background in development of improved crop varieties, seed production, participatory breeding, organizing farmers and technology transfer for sustainable rural development through enterprise development, self-help and community-based project management; remarkable ability to accurately appraise situation and make decision; proven ability to work collegially and collaboratively in diverse, multicultural partnerships; good experience in resource mobilization through writing concept notes and developing project proposal.
I am an enthusiastic and dedicated professional with extensive experience in rice and maize breeding.
